Prof Helmuth Reuter Physician Rheumatologist
Prof Reuter trained in infectious disease and non-invasive cardiology. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Stellenbosch and worked in Namibia for six years before specialising in internal medicine.
He completed most of his training in rheumatology and infectious diseases in Cambridge and Norwich in the UK, but also attended post graduate courses in London, Paris and at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. He completed his PhD whilst working in the Cardiology and Infectious Diseases Units at Tygerberg Hospital.
In addition to practicing at Winelands Rheumatology Centre and the Winelands Medical Research Centre, on each Tuesday, in March 2016 Professor Reuter took up the position as Head of the Division Clinical Pharmacology of Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Campus. This career move returns Prof Reuter to a full time academic career, which involves teaching of students and registrars, supervising PhD candidates, conducting multidisciplinary research and serving patients on a platform crossing the boundaries of the public and private sector.
He has a special interest in the connective tissue diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic vasculitis. He is passionate about patient-centred care and actively involved in research and teaching.
He lives in Stellenbosch with his wife Ulrike and their 3 children. He is a birding enthusiast and keen nature photographer.
